Macron Brings Back Lecornu as French PM Following Several Days of Instability

The French leader has asked his former prime minister to resume duties as the nation's premier only four days after he resigned, causing a period of high drama and crisis.

The president made the announcement on Friday evening, shortly after gathering key political groups in one place at the presidential palace, except for the figures of the political extremes.

Lecornu's return was unexpected, as he said on broadcast recently that he was not interested in returning and his “mission is over”.

It is not even certain whether he will be able to form a government, but he will have to act quickly. He faces a deadline on Monday to put next year's budget before lawmakers.

Governing Obstacles and Budgetary Strains

The presidency announced the president had given him the duty of creating a administration, and Macron's entourage indicated he had been given “carte blanche” to act.

Lecornu, who is one of the president's key supporters, then released a detailed message on an online platform in which he accepted “out of duty” the assignment assigned by the president, to strive to finalize financial plans by the end of the year and tackle the common issues of our fellow citizens.

Partisan conflicts over how to lower the country's public debt and reduce the fiscal shortfall have resulted in the resignation of multiple premiers in the recent period, so his mission is immense.

France's public debt in the past months was almost 114% of national income – the third largest in the euro area – and the annual fiscal gap is estimated to reach 5.4 percent of the economy.

The premier stated that no one can avoid the imperative of repairing the nation's budget. In just a year and a half before the completion of his mandate, he warned that prospective ministers would have to put on hold their aspirations for higher office.

Ruling Amid Division

Adding to the difficulty for the prime minister is that he will face a parliamentary test in a legislative body where Macron has lacks sufficient support to support him. His public standing reached its lowest point recently, according to an Elabe poll that put his approval rating on just 14%.

Jordan Bardella of the far-right National Rally, which was left out of consultations with party leaders on the end of the week, commented that the decision, by a president “more than ever isolated and disconnected” at the official residence, is a “bad joke”.

His party would promptly introduce a motion of censure against a failing government, whose main motivation was dreading polls, Bardella added.

Forming Coalitions

Lecornu at least is aware of the challenges he faces as he tries to establish a cabinet, because he has already devoted 48 hours this week consulting parties that might support him.

Alone, the moderate factions are insufficient, and there are disagreements within the right-leaning party who have assisted the administration since he lacked support in recent polls.

So Lecornu will look to left-wing parties for possible backing.

In an attempt to court the left, officials hinted the president was considering a delay to portions of his controversial retirement changes enacted last year which extended working life from 62 up to 64.

That fell short of what left-wing leaders desired, as they were hoping he would select a prime minister from their camp. Olivier Faure of the Socialists said “since we've not been given any guarantees, we won't give any guarantee” in a vote of confidence.

Fabien Roussel from the left-wing party commented post-consultation that the left wanted substantive shifts, and a leader from the president's centrist camp would not be accepted by the citizens.

Greens leader the Green figure expressed shock Macron had given minimal offers to the left, adding that “all of this is going to turn out very badly”.
